The endoplasmic reticulum is basically a network of fluid-filled tubes found close to the nucleus.  They extend throughout the cell.  The main role of this organelle is to manufacture, process, and transport materials throughout the cell.

The hallway of an airport is similar to the endoplasmic reticulum in several ways. Hallways are passages that lead to many different areas just as the endoplasmic reticulum is tubes extending throughout the cell. The hallway acts as a passageway for people or baggage to go through in the airport. The endoplasmic reticulum has the same function.
